Morse over Internet (MoIP)
Want to exchange Morse Code over the Internet? Read on if you want to know how.
Why would you want to do that?
There are many reasons. What if one of the parties doesn’t have a callsign (yet)? You live so far apart and don’t have the eqipment to reach each other. You’d like to practice without setting up everything. And many more…
Ok, so what do i need?
First of all we need to check the preliminaries. You need:
- A computer running Linux
- the packages
cwandxcwcpandmumble
(install viasudo apt install cw xcwcwp morseor similar depending on your distro)
Optionally you can connect your morse paddle to the pc.
How do I set things up?
Xcwcp worked out of the box for me. Just set the drop down menu to “Receive Keyed CW”. Adjust the Speed and Tone accordingly and hit the Play button.
- The space-bar acts as straight key
- the left and right arrow buttons act as paddle
- the left and right mouse buttons act as paddle
Then start Mumble.
If it’s your first time you’ll be greeted with an “Audio Tuning Wizard”, if not you can find it in the “Configure” menu.
Set up accordingly.
If you’re in the red zone at the Volume Tuning turn the Volume down in xcwcp.
64% was a sweet spot for me.
Next enter the Settings (Configure > Settings). Audio Input should be set up well now. Go to “Audio Ouput” and change the “Output Delay” to around 20ms. If you can’t receive any CW reduce it further.
Great, where can I connect
Generally you could use any mumble server that allows it. You could even set up your own mumble-server if you want to.
I found two servers specifically for Morse over Ip though.
Server by Thomas, DF7TV:
- Address:
216.52.148.10 - Port:
5360
(his site)
Server by Ralf, DK5BU:
- Address:
vs42.gameserver.gamed.de - Port:

(source here you can also find a german manual for Windows)
And there you have it. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to write me.
